Do you hear strange noises emanating from your car? Whether it's a squeaking sound or a rattling noise, unexpected car sounds shouldn't be ignored. These sounds are telling you that something is wrong with your vehicle. Here, we offer a list of common car sounds and what they mean to determine your car's current condition.

Squeaky Brakes

If you hear squeaking brakes, the brakes likely need servicing or repair. Often, when the brake pads are wearing thin, or the rotors are damaged, you'll hear this squeaking sound. When your brakes are squeaking, it's time to bring your car to our service center for an accurate diagnosis.

Engine Rattling

When you hear rattling sounds from the engine, it's probably a sign of premature ignition, which occurs when the engine overheats, the ignition timer malfunctions, or with improper fuel octane ratings. These issues can cause improper fuel and air mixture in the engine cylinder. If you don't have the issue resolved, premature ignition can damage the connecting rods, pistons, valves, and other engine parts.

Engine Clicking

Clicking noises coming from the engine usually indicate that the vehicle is low on oil. When this happens, you can check the oil levels with a dipstick, and, if necessary, top the oil. If this doesn't stop the clicking sound, the upper valvetrain may be responsible. Clicking sounds from the engine can arise if there is too much valve lash or damage to the valves.

Knocking From Under the Hood

If there's a knocking sound coming from under the hood, there is likely an issue with the engine. Knocking sounds can indicate a loose or malfunctioning part. The connecting rods, pistons, and valves in the engine may be working improperly or be worn out. If you hear a knocking noise from beneath the hood, it's always a good idea to get an expert opinion.

Engine Squealing

Squealing sounds coming from the engine are usually related to problems with the accessory belt or serpentine belt. Older cars have accessory belts responsible for various things, including power steering, air conditioning, and alternator function. Newer cars are equipped with serpentine belts. Either of these belts can become loose or worn out, causing a squealing sound. In many cases, the belt can be adjusted to correct the problem, but sometimes a replacement may be required.
